What makes a workplace toxic?

First, it depends on what and how things affect you. What seems toxic to one person, may not with another individual.

Inconsistency is rampant in offices where leaders do not know how to lead. As rules are defined, either in person or in the policies and procedures manual, if there are differences in how employees are treated, this inconsistency can lead to mutiny or employees will leave the workplace for another, more professional environment.

Inconsistencies in wages also makes for a toxic environment. When you discover that someone with similar experience, title, current workload, etc., is making more money than you are, this will create a huge toxic blowup.

Everyone should follow the same guidelines as another or there will be big problems.

Yet another example of toxicity is stress and illness. Long-term stress can lead to auto-immune issues, heart problems, digestive issues and other ailments. Stress is the largest problem in most companies, large and small.

If your boss acts like a dictator and refuses to hear employee feedback on a consistent basis, this too will create problems and lead to a toxic environment.

Toxicity  can and does happen at small, medium and large businesses.

What’s the solution for you if your workplace is toxic? You can always leave and find something else; you can speak to your bosses’ boss and get some help there; you can corral a group of other employees, create a plan for healing at work and present it in a formal way to HR, your boss, or your bosses’ boss.

In the future, interview the company as part of them interviewing you. Ask to speak with other employees as well. Take your own action to determine if wherever you work, works well for you.
